Lint Traps

I*m back to thinking that all of us could use a good stint in a halfway house or even communal living.  We do it as families, but sometimes we don*t get the shared nature of it all very well.   Last night in small group we coined out two guys to a recovery home.  I will miss them!  At the same time, we had new guys who couldn*t understand why the lint traps were such a big deal.  In the halfway house, dirty dryer lint traps have consequences.

There*s nothing like work in a halfway house
To show the importance
Of cleaning dryer lint traps,
Or not leaving the dirty butter knife
In the cupboard
Out of sight.
These sound like small things,
But the guys learn that small things
Grow like Topsy
As my grandmother used to say.
They lead to consequences.
 Consequences arise
From lint
And butter knives
And doors left open
To the smoke deck.
Community consequences.

There*s nothing like the daily reminders
In the halfway house
Of consequence;
Reminders
That all of us contribute
To the mess
Or cleanness
Of a place.
