Forgetful

My beloved's mother called last night: Happy Anniversary. Anniversary? my beloved said, looking at me. Oh, are we ever pathetic! I said. Simply pathetic. We laughed the rest of the evening.

There are so many things
To remember in June
My beloved and I
Forgot our twentieth anniversary
Both of us
Yes
Both of us.
It’s like we’ve been married
Forever.
In a good way.
Married forever.
Maybe we’ll go bowling
This weekend.

Exactly right

19 years married to my beloved today.  A client rescheduled for next week.  Enough space was left between working out and working in.  Today there will be no rush.  Today the cat and my beloved are sound asleep in the chair across from me as I write this.  We remembered it was our anniversary on the way home from working out.  Perhaps we will have spaghetti with pesto tonight.  It all feels exactly right.

Enough was cleared
Enough was added
To make this day
Exactly right.

Base ten creatures

What is it about our brains working in increments of five?  Today a friend mourns and celebrates her husband who died fifteen years ago.  December and January bring up Dad and Mom*s death (15 and 5, respectively).  Wedding anniversaries are celebrated at the fives with precious stones.  What*s so special about fifty?  And what makes us all think the goal of life is to live to be 100?

What is it about the fives and tens?
Five years since Mom died,
Fifteen years for Dad.
My sister says
He still visits her and sits quietly
Like he always did.
She says he still visits me.
Maybe so.

I think sweet sixteen,
Twenty-one as the age of maturity
Were named to get us
Thinking differently.
I also thinK
They are a diversion.
We are base ten creatures.
The five year anniversaries zap us
Like no others.
