Admire from afar

I receive Brain Pickings in my email box every Sunday morning. Today's column highlighted wonderful line drawings of Every Person in New York: Illustrated. Then... another book of people in San Francisco... line drawings filled in with watercolors. I wish I could draw like that.

So many ways
To view the world;
So many ways
To describe the world.
I try to stand back
Admire from afar
Without being jealous
Of a turn of phrase,
A drawing which captures
That particular gesture.
Never mind.
So many ways
Admire from afar
Add my own sparkle
To the world
By writing every day
By paying attention
To the words
To the pictures others draw
Release what I have done
Into the world
Admire from afar
What others see
Add my words to the mix.

Detail

On some days I could spend the whole time... writing.  Details flow like... well... like water.  Sometimes they ooze like honey, creep down volcanoes like lava.  Sometimes details mix together into new details and they seem completely new, even worth a dance interpretation.  Today is not one of those days.  Today is a singular detail day.

Find one detail.
Write it down.
Draw it.
Dance it.
It may very well be
The most important detail
In the world.
It is this moment*s detail
Seen through your eyes.
It reached out and caught
Your attention.
No one else has seen
This particular detail
In this particular way.
It deserves a mention,
More than a mention.
It may even change
The world.
Find one detail.
Write it down.
Draw it.
Dance it.

How does that work for you?

I often write to figure out where I am right now.  My clients, my friends, my family... they do different things.  Sometimes writing.  Sometimes drawing.  Sometimes yoga.  Sometimes other things.  How does that work for you? I ask.  Then I listen to the answer.

Do you write?
I ask.
Do you draw?
I ask.
You mentioned yoga:
How does that work for you?
The list of questions
They come to me
Out of thin air,
Out of a client*s mouth,
Maybe they fly in
Through the sunlit window.
How does that work for you?
I ask.
I want to know for me.
I want to know for you.
Most of all
I simply want to know.
Perhaps some answers
Are buried there.
Perhaps some answers
Lie on the surface
Ready to be gleaned
Like corn left in the field
After harvest.
