Pit orchestra

Twice
I was in
The pit orchestra
For Man of La Mancha.
My hands remember
The fingering
The rhythm
(Almost flamenco)
For the guitar part.
High school
And college productions.
So long ago.
My hands remember.
When I close my eyes
I remember
The sheet music,
Stored in another part
Of my brain.
I think of Dulcinea,
The street woman
Rescued as a maiden
In distress,
A street woman seen
As a damsel.
She saw possibility
And love
In Quixote’s eyes.
My hands remember
The guitar part for
Little Bird, Little bird,
In the cinnamon tree.
The only time I sat
On stage.
My hands remember.
My heart remembers.
It might have been
Yesterday.

Today is a catching day

Gift in the inbox. Sometimes I see them. Sometimes I don't.

Sometimes a new perspective
is shot
over the bow.
I reach out
Catch the bullet
As it flies.
Today is a catching day.
Some days
They fly right past.
Today is a catching day.
I reach up
Find the bullet
Hot in my hand.
I toss it
Hand to hand
Until it is cool enough
To look at.

Anointing

I open the bulletin and remember this is healing prayer Sunday.  The first time my hands were anointed was when I was ordained a priest.  Today was number two.  I remember again I am a priest and hold, oh so many, in my hands.

He reminded me
Of who I am.  Anointed
My head… and my hands.
