Reminders

There's a reason this blog is named what it is. It's largely so I remember. Sometimes I find that it helps others remember as well.

I write reminders
To myself.  All will be well.
All manner of things.

Figs

I am reminded of the The Ugly Duckling. Not a duck, but a swan.

Sometimes fig trees
Demand more attention
When they don’t produce
Than when they do.
Give it another year
The gardener says
Give it another year
I will offer it
My full attention,
Perhaps it will even offer
Something more than
Figs.
Perhaps it is not a fig tree
At all.

Generosity

Generosity, one step at a time. Leave it to a Girl Scout to make it to our door on an icy sidewalk to remind us of our generosity.

We didn’t
Get the sidewalk clear
Of ice,
Yet still
The Girl Scout
Made it to our door.
She knew
We would buy.
We buy every year.
This is a generous neighborhood,
Her mother said
People always buy here.
In keeping
With the neighborhood’s
Generosity
I now work
On the icy sidewalk.
I add to the bags`
For Goodwill.
I allow the kitten
To play with the ornaments
On the bottom
Of the tree.

Pause

It does get easier with time.  My brain takes at least an hour or two before it seizes.  I have learned when I must take it easy.  Pause.  I am gone for the seizure, but there are reminders left behind.  The same questions arise from those who perhaps haven't asked them before: Do they know what causes them? they ask.  I have epilepsy, I say.

It gives pause:
The coming to
The waking up
The bit tongue
A reminder I have left
And returned.
Pause.
Almost
A re-set button.
Still
I never return
To square one.
I’m not sure anyone
Ever returns
To square one.
Pause.
Here it is again.

Is it spring yet?

There are more signs of spring around.  Unlike last year, with an unseasonably early spring, this one feels unseasonably late.  I complained last year too, sure that the earliness meant unknown repercussions for the rest of the year.  Today there are a few buds.  The rhubarb has poked its head through the soil.  The clematis has not yet dared to consider vining.  I wonder if the lateness will bring unknown repercussions for the rest of the year.

Today the sky
Is still gray
But more leaf buds
Emerge.
Soon enough
Ok maybe not soon enough
It will be full on
Spring.
This is the way
It always goes
Even when I forget,
Reminders come full force
Every year
Long about this time
Though of course
I would prefer those reminders
Still earlier.
