George

What's in a name? So much.

It’s a name
But oh so much more.
My life has been punctuated
With Georges,
The first in a long string
Of presidents.
Washington
Of course
On the one dollar bill.
But also
My great grandfather
In Napoleon, North Dakota.
Bank president.
We have a family dollar bill
He signed.
Back then
Legal tender was signed
By bank presidents.
It is framed
In my brother’s house
In Minnesota.
These are singular
Georges.
When my brother and boy cousins
Were born
My grandmother offered a ransom
If one of them was given the name
Of George.
No one took the bait.
Years later she had a dog,
A Maltese,
She named him George,
Drove him around
In her Cadillac.
Since then I have known
Many Georges
They join a long line
Of singularities.

In memory

Remembering Dad. Yes, Lane, I know a collection of squirrels is not an army, but a scurry. Still army seems more appropriate somehow.

It is Christmas Eve day.
It looks like spring.
I don’t have to worry.
The only decorations
Are nuts in a glass vase,
A reindeer on top,
The Christmas bell
On the door handle.
Christmas will come
No matter
The Whos from Whoville
Are nowhere to be seen;
I did not listen
To Lessons and Carols
From England.
The pumpkins from Halloween
Fed an army of squirrels.
Yesterday
The remains went out
With the trash.
It is Christmas Eve Day.
In honor of my father
Who died 19 years ago today,
Who always shopped for Christmas
On Christmas Eve,
In memory of him
We consider Christmas
Today.

Sent

I am a Minnesota girl. My brother coined the phrase "small comfort food," for the meals of our childhood. We learned not to expect too much. In my later adult years, I find people who are seeking "enough-ness" in their life. I have them as friends. I have them as clients. I find them hiding out in the unlikeliest of places. It seems these people are sent so we can help each other find, not just enough-ness, but also, maybe, abundance.

God sends me the folk
Who are in the process of
Finding enough-ness.

Small kitten

I believe there may be an ulterior motive to our daughter not finding a home (other than ours) for that last kitten. She may deny it, of course. She may also deny being in cahoots with her older brother.

Grandchildren may not yet
Be in the picture but here
Is a small kitten.
