Camino del conejo

Rabbit road

Dream Spanish
Is an interesting language.
I must remember enough
From high school.
Last night I followed
A bike path
Named
Camino del conejo
Around and around
A lake,
An endless loop.
I did not see any rabbits.
The loop itself
Was endless.
Donde esta el conejo?
Donde??
Maybe one more loop around
I will see
That rabbit.

Ricochet Rabbit

Home watching cats, and remembering cartoons of my childhood.

I remember Ricochet Rabbit
As the kitten bounces
From chair to table
To claw her way up the desk chair
To loop the loop
Under the chair arm
Land on the floor
On her head,
Only to begin
All over again.
The older cat watches,
Bemused,
If cat bemusement
Is indeed possible.

Garlic soup

Today was a day with other plans.  Then I woke up to thunder and no electricity.  My computer had five minutes left of power in its battery.  I sneaked a yogurt out of the refrigerator.  The back yard was still.  So was I.  I contemplated garlic soup.  I am still contemplating garlic soup and the power has been on for four hours now.

This week brought
Tomatoes red and yellow,
A stapled brown bag
Of garlic.
I contemplate
Garlic soup.
Today is a day
For contemplation.
Once I assemble
The necessary ingredients
Tomorrow may bring
Execution.
Meanwhile a Cooper’s hawk
Stations himself
In the crab apple.
A squirrel sits frozen
On the fence.
A rabbit crouches motionless
Under a bush.
Today is a day
To be still.
Tomorrow may be different.

Jungle Gymnastics

It is another hot muggy day.  I sit in the air conditioning.  Outside the morning activity in the back yard picks up.  I think I will take the turtle for a spin in the warm today.  He loves weather like this.

Outside
The entire back yard
Has morphed
Into jungle gymnastics.
One squirrel has found a stick.
It amuses him entirely.
He throws it in the air
And catches it.
Another squirrel
Lures him away.
They leap and chase up one tree
Down another,
Then
Back to the stick.
A chipmunk has found
The perfect rock
To survey his tiny world
In the sun
With chipmunk eyes.
Yesterday a bunny rabbit
Claimed the middle of the lawn
As his,
Chewed grass,
Cleaned his ears with his front paws
Almost exactly
Like the cat.
In the obstacle course
That is my back yard
The animals are amused.
Sometimes at night
We hear raccoons scream,
Or even catch an opossum waddle
On its tiny possum feet.
He bares his teeth
If he sees us.
