Experiment

Hooray. Today the experiment worked. I will try it again on Thursday.

Today I began again.
It was an experiment to see
Whether this kind of dizzy
Plus a workout
Resulted in something more
Than dizzy.
It didn’t.
The experiment
Had positive results.
I will repeat it
On Thursday.
Results only matter
If doing the same thing
Brings the same outcome.
Today I began again.
Thursday I will
Begin again.

Dizzy

I am on a range of medications which have a possible side effect of dizziness. Thankfully one of these has been subtracted (hooray) and one has been added (boo? hooray? we'll see). The new one seems to offer a new sort of dizzy. Still I'm upright, and not seizury and maintaining my sense of humor (hooray). The world spins for each of us at a different speed.

This new kind of dizzy
Helps me see
The dizziness of others.
Everyone has
His own kind
Her own kind
Of dizzy.
The world spins
For each of us
At a different speed.
It’s when we pretend
It’s all the same
That we get in trouble.

This dizziness

I am learning to chart particular kinds of dizziness. Today's dizziness seems caused by weather. It is a doozy. But still, it does not portend a seizure. Keep your feet on the floor is probably good advice in general.

Now that I know
This dizziness
While working out
This dizziness
Most likely caused
By weather change,
This dizziness.
Now that I know
This dizziness:
It tipped me over
While moving from one machine
To the next
The trainer caught me
Moved me to a machine
It held me feet in place.
Now that I know
This dizziness
Will not kill me
Keep your feet on the floor
The trainer says
Keep your feet on the floor.
How does she know
This one thing
So recently discovered?
Keep your feet on the floor.

So many ways

I see your Facebook posts, Elizabeth Molitors and Laurie Vanderlei.  Flank steak and matching roommate pillows.  I can't compete.  IKEA makes me dizzy.  Deviled eggs and potato salad are more my speed. Macaroni and cheese later this week.

So many ways
To launch a child:
Pack a van
Cook a favorite meal
Shop IKEA
Look at all the possibilities,
Dizzying
“For-real” dizzying
For this mom.
Dad gets
The next IKEA trip.
Me
I have made deviled eggs
Potato salad
Beets with feta cheese
For dinner.
So many more meals
To come.
Macaroni and cheese
Comes next.
So many ways
To launch a young woman
Cook a meal
Sit in the living room
Watch the comings
And goings
So many ways.

I write

This is finally a change I have awaited.  As is often the case with such things, I didn't know I was waiting for this particular change until it arrived.  But here it is.  Right in the middle of dizzying weather changes and learning to live with good brain/bad brain days.  Again I write.  And again I consider playing guitar again.

I write
More reflections on waiting
More reflections on watching
More reflections on paying attention
To the things I have missed
For months
Maybe even years.
I write again.
The days beg me
To write.
So I do.
The spring rain arrives
In the chill.
The seasons turn.
I turn.
I write because
The days simply beg me
To write.
So I do.

Eyes wide open

It did not seem a mystery to my friends.  Of course it*s better to keep your eyes open, they said.  They reminded me of spinning as a child. One even reminded me of how much worse it got after too much wine if you let yourself close your eyes.  Oh yeah, I thought.  That*s right!  So how come I forgot?  Here*s a good place to cite the value of companions who can help us remember.  I have good company.  How come I so often forget?

I puzzled why I couldn*t close my eyes,
Regain composure,
When I got dizzy and blurry.
Of course you can*t
He said.
She said.
You only make it worse.
Still
I puzzled.

On the way to church this morning
I was reminded about spinning around
As children,
That wonderful dizzy feeling.
When we fell to the ground,
Shut our eyes,
The dizziness increased.
Now I remember:
Something happens when we grow up.
That wonderful dizzy feeling
Loses its wonder;
The stomach does unpleasant
Flip flops.
We no longer relish
The feel of the world turned upside down.
Our adult brains
Seek equilibrium,
Stability,
At least the ability
To see straight
Without the loss
Of lunch.

Now I work to keep my eyes wide open,
Despite dizziness and blur.
I catch things I missed
When I closed my eyes against it.
I catch things I missed
when I look through the haze.
I catch things I missed
When I remember
To keep my eyes wide open.
