Walk this way

I am grateful for family jokes, and thankful to Mel Brooks movies for this being a family joke.  It helps keep things lighter.

As I slipped and slid in the mud and drizzle
Along Roosevelt Road,
I thought about
One of our family jokes:
Walk this way.
We say it at home.
We say it
When we trip over the kneeler
In church.
We say it whenever we feel
Particularly klutzy.
Yesterday I said it
To no one in particular
As I could not figure out
Where the button was
On the automatic,
Easy-open,
Umbrella.
Then I said it
As I slipped and slid
In the wet grass
Where sidewalks
Should have been.
Walk this way
I said,
To the cars as they splashed by
Barely two feet away.
Walk this way.
